Batman: Arkham City Lockdown
Description official description
Arkham City Lockdown is a spin-off from the Batman console series by Rocksteady Studios. It is a one-on-one fighting game set between the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. The Joker and other thugs have managed once again to escape from the Asylum and Batman decides to track them down. At the same time major Quincy uses the escape to push his agenda further leading up to the situation Arkham City starts with.
The game consists of a series of one-on-one encounters against thugs and major villains, such as Two-Face, Penguin, Solomon Grundy, Joker, Hairley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Deathstroke. The player uses swipes up, left and right to form combos. Tapping is used to dodge and swiping down or tapping multiple circles can be applied to deflect incoming attacks (marked through red circles) and strike back at once or perform a throw. After hits enemies are often confused, shown with yellow stars surrounding their head, leaving the opening for another attack. Sometimes enemies go into a rage mode where offensive actions are useless. Batman then needs to evade the attacks until the rage vanishes. Gameplay is similar to games such as Infinity Blade and the focus is entirely on fighting, no control over the character's movement in the scenery is exercised.
There are different locations available on the map that are unlocked gradually. After a group of scenes is completed, the boss battle is unlocked. Following a series of fights a tally is made with the amount of attacks deflected and countered, activated gadgets, and bonuses for performance and mission completion. The latter two provide experience points Batman can use to level up and become stronger. In addition he receives WayneTech points that can be spent to acquire gadgets and participate in training sessions that can be done multiple times. Additional WayneTech points can be bought through in-app purchases. Training covers combat, physical and critical strike. Gadgets include for instance a health bonus, powered gauntlets, smoke pellets and the ability to unleash a batswarm. Gadgets cannot be used all the time as they require some time to recharge.
Certain enemies carry weapons and there are standoff sequences where the screen needs to be tapped rapidly to get the edge during a struggle. Next to the regular fighting scenes there are sequences where Batman seeks cover and needs to take out multiple opponents shooting at him. This is done by throwing the batarang using a swipe motion. There are different types of batsuits available, but only for the aesthetic effect. It is also possible to fight as Bruce Wayne, with no suit. After completing the game it can be replayed for tougher enemies and more gadgets.
