🤔 How many Breakout variants are there? (answer)

Road Blaster

aka: Road Avenger, Road Blaster, Road Blaster FX, Road Prosecutor
Moby ID: 10985

Description official descriptions

Road Avenger dates from the era when interactive movies (e.g. Dragon's Lair, Escape from Cybercity, Time Gal...) with film-quality graphics, but limited player movement, were highly popular.

Players assume the role of an angry cop on a wild ride as he pursues a gang of bikers who killed his wife. Players need to race through oncoming traffic, squeeze between trucks, trash motorcycles and steer through lots of explosions. The only thing needed are quick reflexes to follow the instructions on the screen (with an increasing difficulty) in order to keep the animation going.

The action is shown from a first-person view and fast-paced, while still maintaining smooth and detailed anime drawn graphics.

Trivia

Difficulty Level

In comparison to Time Gal, Road Avenger is far more difficult - the final stage requires 64 discrete actions, most levels in Time Gal feature around a dozen. In addition, several parts of the game require several actions in immediately one-after-another in sequence.

Inspirations

The game clearly draws inspiration from the Mad Max films, including: * The look and purpose of the car is similar, apart from the color. * The protagonist's outfit. * The backstory is very similar to the plot of the first film, albeit with the action moved from Post-Apocalypse Australia to late 1990s America.

The River level seems to draw inspiration from the first two Roger Moore Bond films, featuring both a Boat jumping over the road (Live and Let Die) and a 360 degree Bridge jump (The Man with the Golden Gun).

The Main Protagonist

While Time Gal features an early example of a female protagonist in a video game, Road Avenger features one of the first female antagonists as the unnamed leader of the RRR gang.

Theme song

The catchy theme song is performed by the Japanese rock band J-Walk, who are known as Jaywalk nowadays.

Unofficial Amiga port

On 25th of March 2018 Amiga port was released. The port was mostly developed using source XML of the SNES version as a loose guide. For the game's UIs some assets from the unofficial SNES version were adopted as a basis (like the car interior) and then remastered/expanded, while the rest were made from scratch. The UIs in the Amiga version feature (among other changes), more colors, score and live indicators, a brand new, smoother steering wheel, as well as radio and speed meters anims.
