Avernum V
Description official description
All was prosperous and peaceful in the Empire—until recently. Someone tried to assassinate the Empress…but who would dare such a thing, and to what end? The answer to the mystery may lie with the rebel Dorikas, who has fled to the subterranean realm of Avernum. A party of four brave heroes must pursue Dorikas underground, solve the mystery, and restore order to the land.
Avernum V is an isometric role-playing game in the tradition of Ultima, Fallout, and the previous Avernum games. Create a party of four characters of various races, classes, skills, and traits and explore a vast underground territory. Exploration and menu navigation is mouse-driven with optional hotkey controls. The combat mode is a turn-based affair in which each party member has a given number of action points for movement, melee/ranged attacks, and spellcasting.

Not a bad way to spend several hours.
The Good
- Lengthy dungeon crawl, lots of combat encounters
- Decent game mechanics, turn-based combat
- Best balance of the second Avernum Trilogy
- Decent writing (what there is of it...)
The Bad
- Dated but functional graphics
- Not as many tactical options as there could be
- Small party size of four characters
- Individual combat encounters aren't exactly epic
- If you've played the previous Avernums you'll feel you've seen it all before...
- Light on story
The Bottom Line
The game is definitely worth playing, especially since you can get all three games in the second Avernum trilogy in a bundle for a good price. It's possible the game places too much emphasis on dungeon crawling and not enough on plot and character interaction, but it's not a big deal.
