Army Men: World War
Description official description
Some things in life are inevitable: death, taxes, and the Green Army being at war with the Tan Army. Players take on the role of the Green Army and must put a stop to a Tan Army insurgence.
Army Men: World War is a squad-based strategy game. The game includes 12 missions themed after World War II, plus a Boot Camp tutorial. Players take command of an entire infantry squad although the game also lets the player control an individual squad member who has the ability to run, crawl, and dive. The infantry squad is armed with guns and grenades. Guns include things like machine guns, flamethrowers, bazookas, and sniper rifles. Even vehicles like tanks and jeeps can be put to use. An occasional napalm or air strike can also be called in to destroy the enemy forces. Players should try to keep as much as their squad alive, as it's possible for squad members to carry over to future missions.
The game also has a Battle mode for skirmishes and a multiplayer mode too.

The Good
It's army men, so it's a pretty fun franchise. It's a top-down/isometric shooter, which is a really fun concept. It also runs pretty well on modern Linux systems with wine.
The Bad
The graphics and controls are just not refined enough, compared to other isometric style games where you control groups of characters (think Age of Empires), World War feels really clunky. Selecting and de-selecting your squad is fiddly, you can also control where your guys are going with WASD and move the camera with cursor keys. However the biggest gripe is that the graphics make it almost impossible to see the enemy, certainly in the first mission. 3DO seemed to want to use a high-resolution photo-realistic texture pack which is nice, but when you opt for Sand you can't really see the tan soldiers.
The Bottom Line
Not as fun as other Army Men games in the series, would benefit from a complete graphics and controls overhaul to be any level of enjoyable.
