Aquanoid

Moby ID: 1555

Description

Aquanoid is a straight Breakout variant. The player controls a paddle which is positioned at the bottom of the screen and can move left and right. At the upper part of the screen are a variety of blocks and the goal is to destroy them all by bouncing a ball between the blocks and the paddle - when the player fails to bounce the ball back a life is lost. When the ball touches a block. it disappears. However, there are different blocks with varying properties, e.g. some may require multiple hits or can't be destroyed at all. In some occasions, a destroyed blocks drops a power up which has an effect on the gameplay when picked up with the paddle.

Quite horrible, really.

The Good
Another example of bad shareware (along the lines of Clyde's Revenge), Aquanoid has the exact looks and none of the appeal of the original classic, Arkanoid. With than in mind, lets see what's good about Aquanoid.

Oh, right. I forgot. Nothing. Moving right along.

The Bad
Bad graphics (same as Arkanoid's, but years later, so in short - huh?), terrible sound (or lack thereof, for that matter) and genuinely bad gameplay. Heck, even the mouse control sucks.

The Bottom Line
Stay away from it, or you might get infected.

Magnificent

The Good
It's the best version of Breakout I've ever played. ...with Breakfree coming in at a close second.

The powerups are varied. It's tough. The ball moves really fast, and keeps getting faster. Essentially, we've got hardcore Breakout on our hands.

Oh, and it's especially good in multiplayer!

The Bad
The sound effects are a bit...chirpy. Then again, we're talking 1992, possibly a low budget, and PC speakers.

The Bottom Line
Very, VERY fun, hard and about as addicting as Plants vs. Zombies.
