Overview edit · view history
Slipgate Ironworks, originally founded as Interceptor Entertainment is an independent game development studio based in Herning, Denmark and it was established in 2010. It was founded and is led by CEO and president Frederik Schreiber. Most of the team members have a background in indie games and modding and then got a job in the industry, at companies such as Sony Online Entertainment, Epic Games and Naughty Dog.
The studio's first project was started as a mod called Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded, a remake of Duke Nukem 3D. It originally started as a fan project, but through agreements with Gearbox Software, 3D Realms Entertainment and Apogee Software, Interceptor was eventually granted a personal non-commercial license to the Duke Nukem franchise. After the initial announcement in the fall of 2010, the game was put on hold in September 2011. Initially called Duke Nukem Next-Gen and in November 2010 officially Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded, the game became standalone and would use Unreal Engine 3. In 2013, Schreiber spoke about the delay and stated that the game was put on hold because of the disappointing reception of Gearbox' title Duke Nukem Forever (2011). He stated that Reloaded was a better game and that showing or releasing it would destroy Forever's sales opportunities, which is why Gearbox had it put on hold.
In 2013, the studio's first games were released. Working together with Apogee, Interceptor worked on ports for Duke Nukem (PC) and Duke Nukem II (PC/iOS). In July 2013 Rise of the Triad was released for PC, a remake of the 1994 first-person shooter Rise of the Triad: Dark War and maintaining the spirit of the original game. It was originally announced as Project Rogue. The team has another first-person shooter in development currently called Pathfinder. It is also based on an established franchise, but yet to be revealed.
In February 2014, the first traces were revealed of Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction, a top-down action role-playing game. At the end of February, Gearbox (owner of the Duke Nukem IP) sued 3D Realms / Apogee Software Ltd. (creator of the Duke Nukem IP) over that game's development. The legal status is unknown, but in early March, Interceptor bought 3D Realms / Apogee Software Ltd. The company does not own the separate company Apogee Software LLC, which holds for instance the rights to Rise of the Triad, the franchise Interceptor developed a reboot for, as well as the rights to the name Apogee.
The company filed for insolvency in December 2016 and was known as Slipgate Studios since April 2017. On 21 March 2019, they renamed themselves to Slipgate Ironworks to resolve confusion with a VR game studio of the same name, while John Romero agreed to give them the name and trademark of his former company Slipgate Ironworks (2006-2009).
